Traveling into Canada

- You and everyone in your party will need a birth certificate along with some type of government issued photo ID (driver’s license, military ID, etc.) OR Passport in order to travel into Canada. Effective January 23, 2007 all US residents traveling by air will be required to have a valid passport in order to return to the US. Effective as early as January 1, 2008 all US residents traveling by land or sea will be required to have a valid passport in order to return to the US.

- You are required to have Canada’s gun forms in order to bring firearms into Canada. These gun forms and their instructions are available by calling 1-800-731-4000 from Canada or the USA, or 506-624-5380 outside Canada or the USA. They are also available for download (along with a lot of information about bringing firearms into Canada) from the Canada Firearms Centre web site at:
http://www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca/info_for-renseignement/non-residents/default_e.asp

- The US recommends you stop at US Customs BEFORE entering Canada and list your firearm on their form CF4457 “Certificate of Registration for Personal Effects Taken Abroad." You can download this form & instructions ahead also, but you still will need to go into the US Customs office at the border before entering Canada so they can verify serial numbers on your firearm:
http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/toolbox/forms/4457.ctt/cbp_4457.pdf

- For those traveling with dependents under 19 who may or may not be hunting: You will need a letter of permission signed by their other parent or legal guardian giving you permission to take them across international borders into Canada. Additional details available on the CBSA website. Important: Without this note they may retain you and your child at the border until such time as they themselves are able to contact the other parent to gain permission.
